We got our Experimental School

Its Tulatuli Primary School

After a rigorous (I will surely call it rigorous considering all the aspects we considered) selection process finally we all (me, Simon, Sarah and Eva) are unanimous about one school- Tulatuli Primary School. The reasons or the justifications for the selection of this school is-
1)      Communication is easy from the place of the researcher and also from any point where we can have the construction materials we would like to use. This is important as we are going to work here for a longer period of time.
2)      The school is typical of most of the primary schools in all its aspects- the number of teachers and students, the physical condition and design of the school buildings and also the size of the school ground.
3)      The teachers seem enthusiastic. The Headmaster is a young energetic person and I hope that he can motivate his co-teachers in this project.  The Headmaster seemed inspired by my previous works and achievements which might help me execute my research there.

An additional control in the experimental school
There are 97 students in class three in this school. They are generally taught in two separate sections divided based on even and odd roll numbers (the roll numbers are based on the outcome of the children in the annual exam, roll no 1 means the best student of the class).
In case of such a larger sample, we can go for a random sampling for our experimental group and comparison (control) group from the same school. We can only work with the experimental group – they will be involved in design and also using the outdoor for learning. The control group will have access to the designed school ground and may use for play. We need to be very strict about using the school ground for learning.
Having the control group from the same school might neutralize the factors related to teacher quality (as the same teacher can take the classes) and also the checking of exam paper, the same teacher will give the marks. Having an additional control school (similar in many aspects to this school) will help us compare the results with a school without the intervention.

Therefore, we will have three groups to compare –

Experimental/ Treatment Group
Control Group A
Control Group B
randomly selected from School A
randomly selected from School A
Randomly selected from School B
Intervention+Outdoor learning+Outdoor Play
Intervention+Outdoor Play (No Outdoor Learning)
No Intervention

  2. Well done, Matluba. Glad we all agree on the same school. Good luck for the next phase.

Progress of Work: Day 28

We are almost at the last phase of our construction. Masonry work is finished, bamboo work is a little bit slow and still going on. We have planted plants and the water plants are in site too. Here are some pictures taken today on Day 28. They will grow during the rains) Figure 05: Garden/ Growing area Figure 06: Water learning area

How it looks now!

Our deadline was January 15, 2015 to provide the children with a new school ground and also an outdoor classroom. We were pretty much on time and so far it has taken a good shape. The children have already started using the school ground. We will assess the risks and there will be some additions too later on based on how it is being used now. Here are some pictures of how it looks like now. Outdoor Classroom Growing Area Wet Learning Area Learning through Play Natural Learning Area Shelter Learning with Loose parts Pathway/ Stepping Stones Flat Area/Playground Marking We did not yet work on it. As the soil is compact and children generally use some stick to mark the playground for certain play  (for example 'chi-kut') . We will observe a few days and then decide on the probable location for a finished playground marking. I am in a fix wheth...
